Students have been participating in something called Class Dojo. It tracks students behaviors throughout the day and gives points for good behavior. We have been earning Class $ through Class Dojo points. 1 point is 10 cents. At the end of the year we will have an auction using the money we earned. We do not have many things so if families could donate items it would be much appreciated.

Earlier this year we started making power points about current events in the world. Some will be pictured below. These are about 2-3 weeks old. Author: Zach G.
The garden is going swell! Our plants are growing marvelously. The progress pictured below. Author: Zach G.
This week students will begin doing their own morning messages. The students will be graded on this. Every student must create a morning message before the end of the. Featured below is Kourtney's morning message. These student morning meetings must contain: a greeting, a message, A share or a question to spark conversation, a world of the day, Daily Math challenge, and an activity if we have time. Samus and Pancake? Who are they? This year we got lizards after the passing of Drago. The class voted on names and the two above one. Samus is the small one (Metroid reference) and Pancake is the big one. (Samus top, Pancake middle, habitat bottom.)
This year in Mr.Walters classroom some students made a self watering/growing garden. Pictures down below. We are growing sweet corn, yellow pears, tomatoes, sweet pepper, cucumbers, summer squash, cantaloupe, winter squash, peas, and carrots. Yummmmmmmmmm
Please bring in your old, dried out markers to CRSS where we will ship them to be turned into fuel! Yes, FUEL! So far CRSS has donated over 3,000 markers which created over 10 gallons of diesel fuel! Pretty cool, huh!?
Sixth grade took their knowledge of sound energy and thought of a way to improve our sound equality in the classroom. The researched a product called the Echo Eliminator, conducted some tests, and talked through Skype with a quality sound professional. Through questioning, brainstorming, and collaboration we were able to design a sound system that will be installed in our classroom. Pictures: Left: sound panels we’re using. Middle: Mr. Ted—Sound Professional. Right: our sound tests.
6th grade has sent a total of 1,500 markers to Crayola Color Cycle this year! Nice job 6th graders!
This is just a reminder that the Video Game Challenge ends on the 30th! You must have your game completed and ready to submit to Mr. Walters so that he can turn it in to the website.
Also, you need to write a design document that is over 500 words in length describing the game. The description must include the overall vision for the game (why did you make it?), your target audience, genre, core gameplay, visual style and (if your game has them) characters and story line. This must be typed and saved as a Microsoft Word file by the 30th. Why not take a break from your programming and play a game Mr. Walters made over break? You can try it out at: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/53771652 Good luck, programmers, and HAVE FUN! The National STEM Video Game Challenge is underway. Students can develop their own video game using Scratch, an online programming website. This allows students to use their imagination and creativity to develop real games, while learning basic computer programming! It's free to sign up and submit their games to the National STEM Challenge for a chance to win $1000, $3000 for your school, and receive their own programming software! You can read more about it HERE!
In social studies we created our own emigration posters to recreate the importance of immigration in the 1850s. Students used coffee and tea to make their posters look vintage. They turned out awesome!
Today we learned about the Kinetic Theory of Matter which states the particles that make up matter are constantly moving. We also learned that temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object. So, to test this theory we put food coloring into a glass beaker with hot water and a glass beaker with cold water. We determined that the food coloring that was in the warm water (red dye) diffused (spread out) easily and more quickly than the dye in the cold water (blue dye). This happened because the particles are moving quicker in the warm water than they are in the cold water which allowed the dye to move more freely and spread out! SCIENCE! Well, we are finally in the testing phase of our engineering project. This week we've completely put our banker box PVC holders to the test and so far they are holding up! What an amazing learning opportunity and successful outcome. I am impressed, 6th grade!
Our Mealworm eggs have hatched! We have baby mealworms growing. How do I know? Well, check out the picture below.
Mealworm eggs are microscopic. The baby mealworms are also very hard to see. It takes around 2-4 weeks until they can be easily visible. I had to go searching for this little guy. He is quite large compared to his bothers and sisters. Pretty cool! Students used the engineering process to develop a solution to our banker box problem (tipping and falling down, spilling materials)!
Students were given PVC and PVC connectors to develop a solution. Students worked with their groups to plan, design, and create their engineering solution. They then reflected on their designs and received feedback from their peers on how to improve their work. They loved it! We used a website (tinkercad.com) to create a 3D model sketch of one of our ideas. Students also used graph paper to write their ideas and designs. Our class is registered for the National SumDog Tournament from December 15th to the 18th! Good luck! You can do it, Raptors!
(Our next National Contest will be on January 9th through the 15th!) Sixth grade shipped over 1,000 markers to ColorCycle last week! The markers will be turned into about 3 gallons of fuel! WOW!
If you have old, dried out markers at home please bring them in! Look for a flyer with more information soon! Sixth grade has signed up for ColorCycle which takes old, dead markers and turns them into fuel! Yes, fuel! 308 markers can produce 1 gallon of fuel to power an SUV for 15 miles!
If you have old, dried out markers laying around at home bring them in to be ColorCycled! The 6th grade students spent their Wednesday recess time helping teachers by cleaning fishtanks, sharpening pencils, organizing library books, cleaning reptile cages, relabeling things, and hanging up snowflakes. They were also interviewed by the CRSS newspaper reporters. Look for them in this week's The STEM Scoop! : )
Our students put on a fabulous show for our Veterans today! Way to go CRSS!
I found a phenomenal video on Veterans Day at the following HERE. |
